Re: “Gun Security Fits and Different Lawsuits: A Deadly Gambit” [Nov. 18, Opinion]:
Op-Ed writer Peter Messinger writes, βIt appears we are able to purchase an answer to our ongoing tragedy of gun violence, pitted as we’re towards billions within the coffers of the NRA, MAGA, the Republican Get together, the willfully faceless gun trade and simplistic constitutional interpreters who insist that we exist in an 18th-century world within the guise of superb patriotism.”
I want to level out that the 18th century world Messinger so disparagingly additionally gave us freedom of faith, freedom of speech and freedom of the press. It prohibited our authorities from conducting unreasonable searches and seizures and merciless and weird punishment whereas defending our rights to due course of and a trial by jury. Moreover, the 18th century world established the authorized framework that enabled later generations to abolish slavery and enfranchise racial minorities and ladies.
It appears to me that these individuals again within the 18th century had their act collectively. It’s us within the twenty first century who’re destroying it.
